Starting at Sunset Chapter 8

I had to go to school on Thursday, apparently I had some big test I couldn't miss. I limped my way to the bus stop and hauled myself onto the bus. I found an empty seat and sat down. I looked out the window and Ryan was standing right outside. He came onto the bus. At least half of the girls on the bus made room for him to sit. He walked pass them on. They watched in envy as he made his way to my seat and sat down. I made room for him and stared out the window.

"What are you thinking of?" Ryan asked.

"I'm thinking about the tree outside my window. How did you climb it?"

Ryan looked at me, as if h didn't know what I was talking about. "I climbed," he answered blankly.

"You climbed a tree with no branches?"

"I'm a good climber."

"Tell me the truth Ryan. How did you climb that tree?"

He looked into the isle of the bus to make sure no one was listening.

"I'm a......."

"You're a what? A vampire? Like Edward Cullen?"

"No. I'm a Warlock. I have some kinda weird powers."

"So you can shoot up a tree like a rocket?"

"Well, yea. It's kind of what I do. I can't help it."

"Well ok then. But if you tried, do you think you could?"

"I don't know."

"You do know that Warlocks are evil right?"

"Not all Warlocks are evil," he said with a hint of anger in his tone. I scooted in the seat a few inches, after seeing his eyes turn red. I thought this was just a dream. I pinched myself, but I was awake. Then something else caught my attention.

"Ryan?" I asked with caution.

"What?" he replied without looking at me.

"Why are you riding the bus? I thought your brother drove you."

Now he looked at me. It was a stupid question, I know. I was just curious.

"Because there is something I needed to talk to you about." He snapped his fingers and in a second, we were back in the hospital, the same place we were attacked by the monster thing. But there was one problem. There were no people around, and the world had turned gray and empty.

"Where are we?" I asked. It wasn't even loud enough to have echoed, but it did.

"We're in my world," Ryan said. "My world is nothing but a lifeless mess. You don't see anyone else, other than people of my kind. It gets annoying after a while."

"So why do you and your brothers live in, you know, the human world?"

"My parents thought it would be safer. There's some kind of evil thing brewing in the world below us. The evil creatures from below have been attacking our world for years. We have tried to stop them but they defeat us every time."

"So why did you bring me down here?" I asked, wondering what he was getting at.

"Don't you see? If the monsters can break through our defenses, they can break through yours. Their goal is to kill the human race. My kind was placed here to protect humans. That creature that attacked us the other night was one of the creatures that broke through our defenses."

"So the whole human race is in danger? Including me?" But before Ryan could answer, a woman walked up. She came up to us and pulled down the hood she was wearing.

"Ryan, who is this?"

"No one mom."

"No one, huh? Well then, I guess she won't mind getting ripped apart."

"Mom, don't be so mean. This is Dani. She's the one who will help me lead our army against the monsters."

I looked at him in disbelief. "I'm going to do what?!"
